A return to the Champions League next season will ultimately raise the profile of Liverpool, allowing Brendan Rodgers to span his transfer network to the world’s top clubs.
The Reds have endured a fabulous season so far, and regardless of whether they are crowned Premier League champions, the top players around Europe will know of their potential.
The Brazilian full-back has had a mixed season so far, though as a result of Fabio Coentrao’s injury, he has made that left-back spot his own – making over 20 La Liga starts.
In spite of Fabio Coentrao’s impending return from injury and Liverpool’s reported interest, 25-year-old Marcelo is only thinking about the club he always wanted to play for.
He said: “My best memory is when I signed for Real Madrid.”
“When they told me I was going to sign I didn’t believe them, it was such a spectacular moment.”
“I feel Madrileño. I have been here since I was 18 years old, it’s a long time and I feel like I belong.”
In his interview reported by Mundo Deportivo, Marcelo was then asked how it felt to be named as one of Real Madrid’s leading players.
He added: “You are still young, but you notice the proudness of being one of Real Madrid’s captains. It is a great responsibility because you are an example to all the kids in football.”
A new left-back may well be near the top of Liverpool’s priority list this summer, though unfortunately for Brendan Rodgers, it appears Marcelo is off the market and he will have to search elsewhere.
What left-back should Liverpool try and buy this summer?
