The Hammers were booed off the pitch last week despite beating Hull City 2-1, as fans were unhappy with the brand of football on show from Sam Allardyce's men, but whilst the quality may not have been much better tonight, they are certainly happy with their win.
Goals from Andy Carroll and Mohamed Diame but the Hammers 2-0 up over the Black Cats, and whilst Adam Johnson's goal brought Gus Poyet's men back into the game, West Ham held on to claim a vital three points, taking them on to 37 points - just three away from the 'magic' 40 point mark.
Hammers fans were evidently delighted to pick up their sixth win in the last nine games, praising the fight in the players whilst also singling out Mark Noble, James Tomkins, Stewart Downing, Adrian and even Allardyce for praise on a night where West Ham all but guaranteed their Premier League status for next season.
I'm all for attractive football, but that's 6 wins in 9 now. Give Big Sam credit for that, at least! #WHUFC— Josh Puttock (@JoshPuttock) March 31, 2014

Massive win. So so good defensively yet again. Tomkins, Downing and Adrian played brilliantly. Hammers. #whufc— Jack Dacre Brown (@JackDacreBrown) March 31, 2014
Well done Hammers. A much better performance than Wednesday, in that we could actually pass the ball and showed interest in attack #whufc— Andy Robinson (@Espio1) March 31, 2014
