On this day: Chelsea wanted £60m Ronaldo, new Rio deal & Rodgers hailed 'rhythm and flow'

On March 31 2013 what were the stories that dominated the footballing landscape? Including Liverpool, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Today we cast our eye back to what was happening in the Premier League exactly 12 months ago. What were the main stories? The twists, turns and scoops?

Here are just some of the things going on back on the final day of March last year…

What a difference a year makes

Exactly a year before Liverpool hammered Tottenham Hotspur to go top of the Premier League, they were winning 2-1 at Aston Villa in a match that kept them in touch for a Europa League place.

A goal from Christian Benteke put the hosts ahead only for Jordan Henderson to level before a Steven Gerrard penalty on the hour-mark sealed the victory.

Speaking at the time, Reds manager Brendan Rodgers said, “Our quality was there for all to see, and the rhythm and flow of our passing was improved.”

But did he have any idea that exactly a year later they would be top of the pile?

New deal for Rio

The Mail on Sunday reported that Manchester United would be offering Rio Ferdinand a one-year contract extension.

But a year later and it seems there will not be another…with United’s back-line set to look markedly different next season.

Mourinho coming home…and he wants Ronaldo to join him!

The Express reported that Jose Mourinho would be returning to Chelsea in the summer (they were right!) and that he wanted to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to Stamford Bridge (not so right!).

The paper claimed Mourinho knew the Portuguese superstar was not content at Real Madrid and would “test the water” with a £60million offer.

In the end, the former United player signed a contract extension and Mourinho got Samuel Eto’o instead.
