"I didn't hesitate for one second" - Chelsea star opens up about January transfer

Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic admitted that he didn't even have to think about returning to Stamford Bridge in January.

Matic first arrived at the club back in 2009 from Slovakian side Kosice, but made just three appearances for the Blues before being sent to Benfica in 2011 as part of the deal that saw David Luiz head to West London. The Serbian international then went on to build a great reputation in Portugal, turning in a number of superb performances to catch the eye of many clubs.

It just so happened that one of those clubs happened to his former one. Blues boss Jose Mourinho was looking for a holding midfielder in the January transfer window, and happened to find one in Matic - and the 25-year-old has excelled since his return to the club.

And now having become a key part of Mourinho's starting eleven, Matic says he has no regrets about leaving Benfica for Chelsea.

"The day my agent offered me the chance to come back to Chelsea, I didn’t hesitate for one second," he told A Bola. "You can’t refuse one of the best clubs in the world and the best coach in the world. But my wife and my three-year-old child cried when we left Lisbon."

"But in London I feel really great. I'm also working with a great manager, everybody knows that Jose Mourinho is a fantastic coach. Now I'm training under him every day I just must agree, he really is fantastic. But I'm also close to my former boss Jorge Jesus, we are talking regularly. He was my manager and now he is my friend," added Matic.

Having been cast aside by Chelsea once already in his relatively short career so far, it would've been easy for Matic to either stay in Portugal or seek a move to another club, but it's a testament to Mourinho's pulling power that Matic was able to forget about the past and join forces with 'the Special One'.
