Following Chelsea's shock 1-0 loss to Crystal Palce on Saturday in a result that sees them lose their grip on the top spot in the Premier League as Liverpool leapfrog them after their scintillating 4-0 drubbing of Tottenham Hotspur, manager Jose Mourinho has spoken out over how "everybody" believes the club "clearly" need a striker in the upcoming transfer market.
Considering how talent-rich Chelsea are in the attacking-midfield department, with stand-out performers throughout the season in Eden Hazard, Oscar and, latterly, Willian, the club have, in the majority of games, been able to mask over their deficiencies in the striking role.
However, Mourinho believes that, while those outside the club look toward instant fixes - such as the big-money acquisition of Atletico Madrid's prolific hitman Diego Costa - he will continue to coach and to get the best out of those currently representing the Blues.
"It's clear in everybody that Chelsea next year wants to bring a striker," the boss is quoted to have said. "It's also clear that we want to improve our players. I can't and I don't need to improve [Branislav] Ivanovic, [Gary] Cahill, John Terry [but] there are other guys I need to improve."
The Stamford Bridge side cannot mope about their Selhurst Park loss for too long, as they challenge Paris Saint Germain at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday evening in the quarter-final of the Champions League.
While superstars such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani are on the roster at PSG, there will also be a familiar face for those traveling to Paris from SW6 as Alex is also at the Ligue 1 favourites.
The Brazilian defender spoke of his time at Chelsea, insisting he is not bitter about his exit and will therefore not be looking for revenge. However, if he were facing Andre Villas-Boas and not Chelsea, then this statement may be different…
"This is not about revenge. I had problems at the time with one person, who was Andre Villas-Boas, but not with the club," he told Sky Sports. "I had a good relationship with everyone over there. It is not about revenge but I want to get through this round on our way to winning the Champions League."
On PSG target Hazard, he added: "Hazard is a very good player. We have to be careful down our right flank but also in their midfield. Chelsea are equally dangerous on free-kicks because they have players who are very good at heading."
And finally, The Sun link Ashley Cole with an £8m move to Real Madrid.
