Until last week, there was one transfer rumour that should have excited Liverpool fans more than any other, and that was the one linking Hoffenheim’s Roberto Firmino with a move to Anfield.
The 22-year-old Brazilian is enjoying an outstanding season in the Bundesliga, where he has a quite remarkable 20 goals and 15 assists to date.
It is remarkable because Firmino’s natural position is as an attacking midfielder rather than an outright front-man.
Given the way Liverpool play and the men currently at their disposal, Firmino would have been the perfect addition to Brendan Rodgers’ squad. However any hope the Reds faithful had of that happening was lost following the news that he had signed a new long-term deal at his current club.
It now means the player is contracted to the Bundesliga side until 2017, and as if to rub salt in the wounds of Liverpool and any other club that had their eye on him, the goal-machine netted a vital strike against the reigning European champions Bayern Munich on Saturday.
In a humdinger of a match, Firmino scored the final goal in a thrilling encounter to show that he can net against the best of them.
