On this day: Gervinho stars, Chicharito stays and Chelsea felled

Gervinho

On the 30th March 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Chelsea, Southampton, Arsenal and Manchester United.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 30th March 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 30th March 2013…

Gervin-who?

Arsenal thrashed Reading a year ago today - and the star of the show might just surprise you.

It was a tremendous performance from Gervinho that set Arsenal on their way to a 4-1 win against Reading.

The Ivorian, much maligned at the club for his poor performances, scored one goal and was also swashbuckling in his performance.

However such performances were infrequent and he was flogged in the summer to AS Roma.

And perhaps this performance was a precursor to what he was capable of.

He has been a star for the Giallorossi this season - showing the kind of form that he demonstrated in this game against The Biscuitmen.

Chicharit-no-go

Then Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was telling one of his players that he was going nowhere.

Interest in Javier Hernandez was said to be high at the time - as the Mexican poacher was not a regular at the club.

However Fergie was having none of it:

“Javier is on a long-term contract. We won’t be entertaining any interest. I speak to the players all the time, especially the ones who don’t play. I have said to Javier that it hasn’t been easy to leave him out because of his 16-goal tally.”

Saints go marching in

Southampton defeated Chelsea at St Marys Stadium - essentially ensuring their place in the Premier League for another season.

Jay Rodriguez and Rickie Lambert bagged the goals - that left Rafa Benitez receiving more criticism from his unhappy Chelsea faithful.
