Should Toure win Player of the Year ahead of Suarez and Hazard?

Yaya Touré interview

Manuel Pellegrini believes Manchester City's Yaya Toure should claim it, but is that justified given the competition from the Liverpool and Chelsea men.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has said that Yaya Toure should win the PFA Player of the Year award.

The Ivorian midfielder has been a star for the Citizens in the Premier League this season, scoring 17 goals and providing five assists in 28 appearances, while adding three in three League Cup fixtures.

“I think he (Toure) has had a very good season so far and we hope he can continue,” the Chilean told reporters. “Hopefully we will win the title and he can be the best player.”

But then again, Pellegrini would say that. After all, Toure is part of his squad and he is certainly going to sing his praises.

However, the 60-year-old boss does have a point. Toure has been arguably the best player for City this campaign, his all-round performance in the midfield making the Citizens efficient both in attack and in defence.

The former Barcelona star scored his first career hat-trick during City’s 5-0 home win against Fulham last weekend and then fired in his side’s third against Manchester United in the 3-0 derby triumph at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Toure also netted a sensational goal against Sunderland in the League Cup final at Wembley earlier this month.

The 30-year-old’s consistency has been the hallmark of this impressive City side who are just three points off the pace with two games in hand.

However, there are two other players who could stake a claim to the PFA gong: Luis Suarez and Eden Hazard.

Suarez has been the key to Liverpool’s march towards their first championship title in the Premier League era with 28 goals in 26 league appearances.

Not only that, but the Uruguay international has also been unselfish in his game, helping Daniel Sturridge in his 20-goal haul. For someone who features as a forward, it is a testament to Suarez’s attitude that he has picked up 11 assists.

Then there is Hazard. The 23-year-old Chelsea attacker has scored 14 goals and laid on seven assists in 31 league matches, while also making himself an indispensable figure in Jose Mourinho’s team.

It would be really tough to pick a winner among the three players, but perhaps the one who leads his team to Premier League glory will get the nod.
