Manchester United Player Ratings vs Aston Villa - Mata and Kagawa finally shine

Old Trafford 3

How did Manchester United's players fare in their 4-1 win over Aston Villa? Here are the ratings for David Moyes' side...

David de Gea 7 - Villa's wayward finishing left de Gea with little to do, and the Spaniard was unlucky with the goal as the United wall just failed to jump to block Ashley Westwood's free kick.

Rafael 5 - Booked for his silly challenge in the build up to Westwood's goal, Rafael offered little in the first half and was unsurprisingly substituted at half time.

Phil Jones 7 - Jones produced a solid display despite a couple of nervy moments, and filled in well at right back in the second half after half time, showing his versatility.

Nemanja Vidic 7 - Vidic was positionally good throughout, but did lose Christian Benteke a few times, only to be let off by the Belgian's poor finishing on the day.

Alex Buttner 6 - Filled in for Patrice Evra at left back, but didn't really show enough to suggest that he's the long-term heir to Evra. Booked in the first half but had a few good drives forward down the left.

Darren Fletcher 6 - Worked hard in the United engine room and didn't allow Villa time in possession, but was occasionally profligate in possession.

Marouane Fellaini 7 - Fellaini was his usual robust self in midfield, using his physicality to win possession back for United but there are still questions over his proficiency in possession.

Ashley Young 6 - Ineffectual throughout, Young's delivery into the box was regularly poor as he failed to trouble his former club, and could find himself out of the Old Trafford exit door this summer.

Juan Mata 8 - Finally bagged his first goal for the Red Devils with a well taken right footed finish to put United 3-1 up, and Mata was bright throughout, getting on the ball in the final third and looking to unlock the Villa defence.

Shinji Kagawa 8 - Kagawa has rarely lived up to the hype attached to him, but he impressed against Villa with creativity and energy, and put in an excellent cross for Wayne Rooney's equaliser.

Wayne Rooney 8 - United's talisman came up with the goods again today, heading home Kagawa's cross before converting the penalty just before half time. Wasn't quite as influential as usual, but his goals were key today.

Subs:

Michael Carrick 7 - Admirably filled in at centre half again after Rafael was substituted, but like Vidic, had some trouble marshalling Christian Benteke.

Adnan Januzaj 7 - Superb work in Javier Hernandez's goal, skipping past the Villa defence before putting in a stunning cross. Once again showed his immense potential.

Javier Hernandez 7 - Hasn't had many opportunities this season but Mexican international Hernandez bagged just his third league goal of the season with a smart back post finish from Januzaj's cross.
