Last season’s treble-winning Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes says the German champions are the best team in history.
The German giants were recently crowned Bundesliga champions with a record seven games remaining after beating Hertha Berlin 3-1 in midweek.
After Jupp Heynckes secured a monumental treble last season before retiring from the game, it would have been difficult to imagine such a perfect season being topped – despite the iconic Pep Guardiola taking over.
The German juggernaut, however, appears to have somehow found an extra level and Pep Guardiola’s men are favourites to land yet another historic treble.
The Red Devils have struggled throughout the season, and their lowly position of seventh in the league is simply not good enough for a team of their stature.
With hopes of a top four spot all but vanished, United’s only option of regaining Champions League football is to do the unthinkable and win this season’s competition.
David Moyes’ men responded well to their near-Greek tragedy by overcoming Olympiakos 3-2 on aggregate, but their 'prize' for an excellent comeback was to be paired alongside Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.
How big is Manchester United’s task of overcoming their old enemy? According to Jupp Heynckes comments in Diario Sport, it is the biggest they will have ever faced.
Heynckes said: “Right now, Bayern can count on the best players in the world.”
“They can cover each position well. They always had 11 or 12 players that had a lot of success, but never 17 or 18 like now.”
“What they achieved in the Bundesliga has never been done before. Bayern Munich currently have the best team of all time.”
United may want to argue their own treble team of 1999 belong in such company, but there is no question if they repeat the feat of knocking out the Germans out of the competition, it will be seen as a freak result - not because this current side are better.
