Monaco defender Eric Abidal dismisses retirement rumours

Eric Abidal takes to Twitter to dispel rumours on his health problems.

Monaco defender Eric Abidal has dismissed suggestions that he will retire from football.

The 34-year-old left-back has been struggling with heath issues for the last three years.

The France international was diagnosed with a liver tumour and underwent an operation in March 2011 while he was under contract at Barcelona.

Abidal had a transplant in April 2012 and after being released by the Spanish champions last summer, he moved back to his old club Monaco.

The former Lille and Lyon defender has been a regular for Claudio Ranieri’s side this season, featuring in 25 Ligue 1 matches and in two Coupe de France fixtures.

However, rumours on Twitter this week claimed that Abidal has suffered a relapse of his liver problem, and that he could be forced to retire from football.

The Frenchman has now taken to the social networking website, insisting that he is fully fit and is training ahead of Monaco’s Ligue 1 match against Evian Thonon Gaillard away from home on Saturday.

Monaco are currently second in the league table with 63 points from 30 matches, 10 points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
