Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur were both after Alen Halilovic over the course of the past 18 months - in fact Spurs were reported to have signed him last summer. It was announced in June 2013 that he and Tin Jedvaj had already agreed to move to White Hart Lane from Dinamo Zagreb.
That never happened.
After this the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City from the Premier League were said to want the player.
They were not alone.
Other suitors were said to include Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, Juventus, CSKA Moscow and Bayern Munich - but he is of course off to Spain.
Halilovic agreed a deal to join Barcelona in February and will join up with his new club in the summer from Dinamo Zagreb.
Yesterday saw the club officially unveil the signing of the young Croatian - dubbed the ‘next Luka Modric’.
And Halilovic, who was perhaps the most pursued player in European football, has spoken about why Barcelona got his vote:
“I am delighted and it’s hard to find the words to describe how I feel... Of course, Barcelona is something special, I have loved the club since I was a kid and it will be an honour to be able to play for Barça. But before that, I want to win the double with Dynamo and then I’ll start concentrating on my new club.”
Halilovic, who will spend the 2014-15 season with the Barcelona B side in the Segunda Liga, therefore seems to have let his heart rule his head in his decision.
Although his heart has made a pretty good decision indeed.
