Arsenal v Manchester City - star major doubt for clash

David Silva 3

Manchester City star David Silva is a major doubt for this weekend’s clash against Arsenal at the Emirates.

Arsenal and Manchester City at the Emirates stadium this weekend promises to be a pulsating top of the table clash, though one star player looks likely to miss out.

The Mirror reports that Manchester City’s Spanish international David Silva is likely to be sidelined after having extensive treatment following a knock he picked up on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old was a key player for Manchester City at Old Trafford during the week, highly influential as his team convincingly beat David Moyes’ men 3-0. Despite playing the 90 minutes, however, it's understood that Silva picked up an ankle knock which caused him pain after the game.

It's a blow for Manchester City, as the diminutive Spaniard has been one of the Premier League’s most outstanding performers this season. In 20 starts, he has scored five and assisted with a further eight - involved in the scoring of a goal every 138 minutes.

For Arsenal, however, Silva's absence will come as a welcome relief. Despite entering 2014 at the top of the Premier League table, a number of injuries have seriously derailed Arsenal’s attempts at winning the title for the first time in a decade. Key players such as Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshire, Mesut Ozil, Laurent Koscielny and Lukas Podolski have been ruled out at vital times, and a recent poor run of results have seen Arsenal fall off the title pace.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s immediate attentions will now turn to holding off Everton’s late surge for a Champions League spot for next season - and, of course winning the FA Cup and bringing the first trophy back to Arsenal in 9 years.

Everton and Arsenal are set to face off against each other in the Premier League in a possible season-defining match at Goodison Park in 9 days time, and Silva’s probable absence for the Manchester City clash this weekend will certainly enhance Arsenal’s chance of grabbing a much-needed confidence-boosting win.

Will Arsenal be able to exploit David Silva's probable absence ?
