United stopper De Gea shows his class with get well soon Tweet to World Cup rival

Victor Valdes is out of the World Cup - and Manchester United stopper David De Gea is likely to go to Brazil.

Manchester United have had a pretty horrendous season with very few of their players coming out of the campaign with much to be proud of.

But one player who has been in top form is David De Gea.

Initially the young Spaniard struggled at Old Trafford but he has since come good - and besides from being an excellent player he has also shown a great sportsmanlike side to his personality this evening.

Earlier today saw a moment nobody involved in football would have wanted to see.

Victor Valdes, playing his final season at his boyhood club Barcelona, landed awkwardly after catching a floating ball - and it was quickly clear he had suffered a nasty looking injury.

That has now been confirmed - Valdes has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee - ending his season and World Cup chances.

With his contract expiring in the summer - Valdes has just played his final game for Barcelona, and it ended in ignominious fashion.

But for De Gea his injury gives him a big chance to make a place in the Spanish national team his own.

At the moment there is simply no moving Iker Casillas, Pepe Reina and Valdes from the Vicente Del Bosque squad - now one slot is open.

Diego Lopez of Real Madrid will undoubtedly be a competitive opponent for the role of third choice - but sources in Spain seem to believe Del Bosque will go with the young pretender instead ahead of the World Cup in Brazil

Now while, injuries aside, the prospect of heading to the World Cup this summer will undoubtedly fill the young man with joy - he would of course have preferred to make it in different circumstances.

And he showed his heart was in the right place this evening.

He sent a Tweet Valdes’ way to offer him best wishes and a swift recovery.

It was a nice touch from De Gea - and shows he is more than just a great keeper, but also a good bloke.
