On this day: RVP hints at retiring at United, Arsenal to flog flop and Chelsea youth policy slammed

Van Persie United

On the 27th March 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 27th March 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 27th March 2013…

Being Frank

Chelsea’s former chief scout Frank Arnesen took a swipe at his former club over their misuse of his young players.

Arnesen, who was also the director of youth development at the club, stated:

“At Chelsea, we had fantastic talent, we built up marvellous players, but they needed to be given a chance and they never were. The pressure is so big. Managers in England are going out and buying players, the level is high, and it is difficult for them because if they lose two or three games, they are gone.”

A year on and Chelsea still have plenty of talented youngsters - but most are currently out on loan across the continent.

Gervinh-go

Arsenal were first beginning to let clubs in Europe know that their flop forward Gervinho was available in the summer.

The Ivorian was having a mare of a season at The Emirates and most fans at the club were looking forward to saying goodbye to the striker.

Galatasaray and Fenerbahce were being linked - but in the end Roma got him.

What a difference a year makes. Gervinho has been one of the star players in Serie A this campaign as the Giallorossi have been in great form.

Arsenal fans are probably still glad to see the back of him - but must be wondering why he could never do it for them.

RVP-leased to stay

Robin van Persie announced that Manchester United could be his final club.

The Dutchman was in the midst of an excellent season and had no desire to move on:

“For the next few years I will be at Man United - maybe longer. United could be my last club. You have a number of clubs in Europe where older players can find it good, where they are valued. You used to have that at Juventus and AC Milan, Manchester United today is a good example. So who knows how long I will stay at the club.”

A year on and RVP has had a tough time of it recently - accused of wanting a move away from the club.

He has ruled out such a move now and is set to stay - although is currently out with a knee sprain.
