Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Gerrard performance against Sunderland - 'True legend!'

Steven Gerrard Celebrates

Steven Gerrard was in superb form as Liverpool won an important match against Sunderland at Anfield.

Liverpool battled to an important win against Sunderland last night as they defeated the relegation strugglers 2-1 in the Premier League at Anfield.

The result allowed Brendan Rodgers’ side to move back into second place as they seek an historic Premier League title, which would mark what has been a truly special season.

Steven Gerrard was at his very best with a superb free kick to put Liverpool 1-0 up before Daniel Sturridge doubled the advantage in the 48th minute.

Liverpool sat back on their lead, protecting it well until Ki pulled one back for the Black Cats in the later stages of the game but fortunately Liverpool’s back four held out for the three points.

“It's up to other teams to lose, so we will keep working hard. I'm not playing it down, I don't play silly mind games. If City win their games, they win. It's simple maths,” Rodgers told the BBC after the game.

Gerrard’s performance in particular was impressive and Liverpool’s captain led from the front in many different aspects.

His free kick was stunning and gave Vito Mannone absolutely no chance of getting over to stop it, finding the top corner precisely. The pace, power, swerve and dip made it an impossible shot to stop and Luis Suarez will be grateful he let Gerrard take the set piece ahead of himself.

Gerrard showed just what the goal meant to him with an emphatic celebration but his work didn’t stop there. He worked hard to control the midfield throughout the game, ensuring that no one switched off, maintaining the pressure over the away side.

Liverpool need Gerrard to produce more top performances over the rest of the season and maybe, just maybe, if he continues to play at his best, he’ll be lifting the Premier League trophy.

Here’s what Liverpool fans made of his performance on Twitter.
