For Liverpool who have recently been sweeping away their opponents it was something of a different battle yet they proved to have the mettle of true champions by clawing out victory.
But it was also a game which saw Liverpool score two fabulous goals.
The first came courtesy of a Steven Gerrard free-kick - the second thanks to the sublime left-foot of Daniel Sturridge we will all be hoping is in fine form this summer.
His effort left Vito Mannone stranded and was just yet another notch on his tremendous season so far.
The goal itself took Sturridge to 20 league goals - the first time he has achieved such a feat.
Considering he was practically let go by Chelsea the England star can certainly look back on this season with pride already.
And that pride and joy was shared by another professional.
Sturridge played at Manchester City before venturing off to Chelsea - and was at the Etihad with Micah Richards.
They came through the ranks together at the club - and despite the fact their teams are in a genuine title fight with one another Richards was quick to congratulate his old friend on the result.
