Karim Benzema’s agent Jonathan Hope has strongly suggested the Frenchman could be drawn towards Manchester City this summer but there’s a problem and it plays right into the hands of Chelsea.
The Real Madrid forward has been linked with moves away from the Bernabeu throughout the season, with City and Chelsea both reportedly interested in him from the Premier League.
Hope has been making a lot of noise in relation to City’s chances of getting the striker with the agent having already looked at the possibility of re-opening the possibility of an Etihad move.
“I’ve proposed rekindling the interest from Manchester City for Karim. After his fine form in El Clasico I've proposed him as a summer target. Karim would love to play in the Premier League and Manchester City would be his choice of club, however reuniting with Mourinho at Chelsea would also be of interest,” he told TalkSport.
In the same TalkSport report which carries Hope’s quotes, there is the suggestion that any deal with Manchester City could rely on Sergio Aguero heading in the other direction, which would be complicated to say the least.
“The Spanish giants may also try to include Sergio Aguero in any deal with City, having long admired the Argentine, although the Premier League side are unlikely to sell.”
That’s where the matter plays to Chelsea’s advantage because City are likely to refuse losing Aguero to gain Benzema, which could leave Chelsea free to try and do a deal of their own.
If Benzema leaving Real Madrid depends on a striker going the other way then Chelsea do have a trump card in the form of Romelu Lukaku.
He may not be the high profile striker that Los Blancos would be hoping for but Mourinho is reportedly open to letting the Belgian lave, preferably to a foreign club outside the Premier League.
If it comes down to a straight up cash deal then both Premier League giants can be competitive if a bidding war breaks out for Benzema but would City axe Aguero to get Benzema? Don’t count on it.
