When Manchester United beat Olympiakos to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League, they knew it was about to get a whole lot harder.
A quick look at the other seven sides left in the competition would have told them that there were no easy games. In fact, every possible match-up was tough in the extreme.
When you look at the remaining sides and suggest the best draw could be last year’s beaten finalists, you know the competition is intense. But rather than Borussia Dortmund, United drew the club they overcame in that final, Bayern Munich.
It was always going to be a tough ask against the reigning Champions and last season’s treble-winners, but the task has now got even harder.
While United were losing to Manchester City on Tuesday evening, Bayern were winning the Bundesliga…in March!
Their 3-1 victory over Hertha BSC saw Pep Guardiola’s side crowned champions of Germany with a record seven games remaining.
And in so doing, it means Bayern can now focus all their attention on trying to overcome United in the next stage of the competition they will be desperate to defend.
This Bayern side are breaking records left, right and centre, and they will be hoping to add another to their list by winning Europe’s elite competition again in May.
The task for United was never going to be easy, but with the Bundesliga wrapped up for their all-conquering opponents, it just got that much tougher.
