Newcastle failed to build on their 1-0 win over Crystal Palace last weekend, as they fell to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Everton. Goals from Ross Barkley, Romelu Lukaku and Leon Osman sent the Toffees back from St. James' Park with all three points, and caretaker manager John Carver was left to rue his side's lack of goalscoring threat without Loic Remy.
“This is becoming a familiar question isn’t it. Let’s be honest, stats don’t lie and you can see that yourself when you look at how many goals the rest of the team have got," Carver said.
“Everybody has to chip in though, it is not just about putting pressure on Loic and Papiss [Cisse]; Moussa [Sissoko] has to chip in, [Yoann] Gouffran has to chip in, Cheick [Tiote] has to chip in, Vurnon [Anita] even – and he almost did, the centre-backs need to get a goal from somewhere. It is everybody trying to contribute and get us to win the game," added the former Toronto FC boss.
With their lack of cutting edge in the final third, Magpies fans are wanting winger Hatem Ben Arfa to be reintroduced to the starting line-up. The former Marseille man has been on the fringes for some time now, but provided a real creative spark when he came on against Crystal Palace, and make an impact against Everton too - where 86% of fans wanted him to start the game - but ultimately he didn't, and Newcastle lost the game.
Meanwhile, Newcastle have been linked with yet another swoop on French football, this time in a bid to sign Sochaux's promising striker Cedric Bakambu. The 22-year-old would only cost a reported £2.5m, but is also interesting Championship side Nottingham Forest, meaning Newcastle will have to move quickly if they see Bakambu as the answer to their goalscoring woes.
