Liverpool morning news, Rodgers tips Suarez for POTY gong, loan stars shine.

A selection of the latest stories involving Liverpool Football Club this Wednesday morning.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has hailed Luis Suarez as a ‘gladiator’ and has said the Uruguayan forward is on his way to becoming footballer of the year.

The Liverpool manager also alluded to Suarez maturing off the field having not been caught up in any controversy regarding his behaviour so far this season.

Rodgers is quoted in the Liverpool Echo, saying: “He is certainly on his way to that (Player of the Year). We have a number of candidates here – players who have been at the top level for a lot of the season.

“But Luis probably more than anyone has been really consistent so he has to be in the reckoning.

“I think at this time throughout the country people will be looking at Luis and admiring not only his development on the field – he has become a better player again this season – but also his development off the field.”

Former winger Harry Kewell has announced his retirement from professional football, as he will finish his career at Melbourne Hart in April. Kewell was signed by Gerard Houllier in 2003 from Leeds United and was part of the Liverpool side that won the Champions League in Istanbul in 2005, and the FA Cup winning side in 2006 – both under Rafa Benitez.

Liverpool’s loan stars have shone this week in the Football League. Conor Coady scored twice for Sheffield United in the 2-0 win against Crawley Town in League One whilst Jordon Ibe got his first goal for Birmingham City in a 3-2 win over Millwall in the Championship.
