Chelsea reportedly open talks with £30m striking sensation - Mourinho's saviour?

Diego Costa

Speculation today suggests that Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho could finally land a big name striker - with Atletico Madrid's Diego Costa targeted.

Chelsea sit top of the Premier League table with just seven games to play, though Manchester City lie just a place behind the Blues, and have two games in hand - win those and Chelsea would lose their lead at the top of the league. Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge has Chelsea for the title once again, but he has done it without a true goalscorer in his regular starting line-up.

Samuel Eto'o is the top scoring striker for Chelsea this season, but he has hit just eight Premier League goals since arriving from Anzhi Makhachkala last summer, whilst Fernando Torres and Demba Ba have combined for just seven league goals this term. The need for a world class striker is seemingly top of Mourinho's priority list at the end of the season, and Atletico's Costa could be the man.

With a stunning 30 goals in 32 league games for Diego Simeone's side this season, Costa is one of the most sought after strikers on the planet, and reports today state that Chelsea have begun negotiations with the Brazilian-turned-Spaniard's representatives over a summer move to West London.

Goal have reported that Chelsea are willing to pay up to £30m to land the services of Costa, and that talks between Chelsea and representatives of the striker have already begun, with more negotiations planned for next week. It's also believed that the Blues want to close the deal for Costa before he goes to the World Cup, where he is expected to be a key part of Vicente del Bosque's side.

With a title challenge close this season, the addition of 25-year-old Costa could be the next piece of Mourinho's puzzle as he looks to bring sustained success and stability back to Stamford Bridge during his second spell with the club.
