United morning news: Defender ‘dealt with’; Fergie’s right-hand man suggests derby-day delight

A select round-up of news relating to Manchester United

Former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has suggested tonight could be the night that the reigning champions turn their season round.

Speaking to Talk Sport in an exclusive interview, Sir Alex Ferguson’s former number two said, “One game changes things in football and this could be the night to do it.

“I would never rule out Manchester United. They have still got very, very talented players. They have just lost their way a little bit, but the talent is there, the quality is there.

“It is just making sure the heads are on right when it comes to the big games.”

Well they do not come much bigger than tonight, with Manchester City heading to Old Trafford desperate for a win of their own to keep their title hopes well and truly on track.

In other news, the Guardian reports that Chris Smalling has been disciplined by David Moyes following an incident early on Sunday morning.

The defender was photographed apparently singing and dancing in the street after not featuring in United’s 2-0 victory over West Ham United due to injury.

Asked about the photo, Moyes is quoted as saying, “I’ve dealt with it and I’ve spoken to Chris. That would be as much as I would want to say on it.”
