James McCarthy believes the Gunners will be looking over their shoulders with just eight games remaining of the season.
Arsenal's latest capitulation at the hands of Chelsea has gone on to give the teams around them hope that a top four finish is still possible this season.
Manchester City and Liverpool won comfortably at the weekend cementing their place in the top four even further. However, Arsenal's staggering 6-0 loss to Chelsea could prove to be the catalyst to motivate the chasing pack right up until the fat lady sings, so to speak.
'They will be looking over their shoulder now,' said McCarthy.
'Obviously they will be a bit worried but we take it a game at a time and we have a big game against Newcastle. We have never written ourselves off for a top-four finish. We will give it our best shot.
'We have eight points between us and Arsenal and we have a game in hand, plus Arsenal to come here. It's still open and we will give it our best shot. We are still confident we can achieve something big here this season.'
Regardless, the betting man would undoubtedly still put money on Arsenal finishing above Everton this season, even though it's likely to be closer than anyone would have predicted in December.
Nevertheless, you can never tell in football and Arsenal's latest defeat could prove to be one that defines their season.
For now, It's important that Wenger gets his players focused for the game against Swansea, as anything other than a win could spread the infection caused by the heavy Chelsea loss further.
