Tonight sees a Manchester derby that could have huge ramifications not just for the title race, but for the future of Manchester United.
Don’t believe me? Well how about this for a scenario? United continue their fine recent form against Manchester City and in so doing generate the momentum they need to overcome Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Too fanciful? Okay, what if City go to Old Trafford and dish out an absolute drubbing, proving that United’s recent wins were nothing more than another false dawn?
In short, tonight’s game is about so much more than just three points and bragging rights. It gives City the chance to prove the tide has turned for the long haul. But it also gives David Moyes the opportunity to show he can cut it in games against the best England has to offer.
Whatever happens, it well be a must-watch. And one player who will almost certainly be involved tonight has been speaking about all things City in a recent interview with FourFourTwo.
Joe Hart has overcome a difficult spell to regain the gloves for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. But he has been speaking about another goalkeeper or, more specifically, an aspiring stopper, in the form of Wayne Rooney.
When asked if the United man likes going in goal during England training, Hart joked, “Yeah, he does, he likes spraying the balls and catching balls but when it actually comes to whacking a ball at him, he’s a wimp.”
While it was a comment clearly meant in jest, Rooney has the chance to prove he is anything but in this evening’s match. And after what happened on Saturday, do not expect Hart to wander too far off his line.
