Not Rooney! Gary Neville selects United's star performer of the season

David De Gea Spain

David de Gea is the player Gary Neville believes is Manchester United's most consistent.

It has not been a vintage season by Manchester United's standards, and one fans won't be worry to see the back of.

A Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich offers more fear than it ever would have done before, despite manager David Moyes talking up the club's chances.

If United are to stand a chance of progression against the Bundesliga champions, one man will be needed to perform heroics, and that's goalkeeper David de Gea.

Just as well then, that the Spaniard is turning in performances worthy of a side leading the Premier League, and will be expected to put in another superb one against Manchester City this week.

During a Q&A session on Twitter, former United captain Gary Neville gave De Gea's name when asked to select United's top performer this campaign.

This has been the first season De Gea has not been embroiled in a battle for the number one spot, with David Moyes sticking with him in goal and largely ignoring Anders Lindegaard.

De Gea's form of late has been getting better and better, pulling off a crucial double save at home against Olympiakos last week which kept the tie in United's favour.

There have been disappointing moments; his role in a late goal in the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Sunderland, and the late equaliser against Fulham, but the hope is that he has really put those behind him and become the best of what has been a bad bunch this year.

Wayne Rooney has shown flashes of brilliance but failed to do it in the big games this season, a rarity for him, while each time Robin van Persie has shown what he is capable of he has suffered injury.

Elsewhere in the squad it's tough to make any sort of convincing case when it comes to standout performers this campaign. United fans will hope the Spaniard leading the way will cause others to follow and up their games between now and the end of the season.
