Manuel Pellegrini's side sent United crashing back down to the earth after successive wins of Olympiacos and West Ham, as City ran riot over their neighbours from the first whistle to the last.
Edin Dzeko opened the scoring after just 45 seconds, and added a killer second after the break to put City 2-0 up. Yaya Toure's precise late striker sealed the 3-0 win, putting City into second place in the Premier League table, just three points behind Chelsea but with two games in hand on Jose Mourinho's side.
The entire City team performed admirably throughout, but star performances from the likes of Toure, David Silva and Vincent Kompany handed City the impetus, and the star man was two-goal hero Dzeko, who silenced some of his doubters with two big goals.
City fans were understandably delighted with the Bosnian's display on Twitter, with some comparing him to former club legend Shaun Goater, and praising him for always coming up with goals in big games.
Happy that Dzeko got a few goals tonight, he deserves it. #MCFC— Chlo Farnell (@Chlo_Farnell) March 25, 2014
