Arsenal and Liverpool have both been linked with moves for talented Lyon youngster Alexandre Lacazette.
The 22-year-old striker has been in great form for the Ligue One giants when he’s been used, scoring 13 goals and weighing in with five assists so far this season.
For a reported £10 million fee, he seems like the perfect investment but there are complications should either Arsenal or Liverpool move for him in the summer.
As talented a centre forward as Lacazette may be and for as much blistering pace he possesses, he isn’t the marquee striker signing that Arsene Wenger will be looking for which creates two problems for the club and the player.
Firstly, Lacazette won’t want to come in as a back up striker to Olivier Giroud and secondly, his signing risks alienating Lukas Podolski.
Lacazette has enjoyed a prominent role with Lyon over the second half of the season, creating a very exciting reputation for himself in French football, which suggests he wouldn’t want to leave that to go and sit on the bench at Arsenal.
As for Podolski, the German has been crying out for his entire career to move into a central attacking role, which could be enabled this summer but only if Arsene Wenger signs a left sided winger.
Can Lacazette play there? He certainly has the versatility but whether he’d be happy being bought by Arsenal as a left winger is doubtful.
As for Liverpool, there is no conceivable way that Brendan Rodgers could sign the Frenchman and inject him into the team ahead of either Luis Suarez or Daniel Sturridge.
There is absolutely no logic behind him making that sort of decision.
Hence, he’d also be bought by Liverpool as a back up, potentially not enjoying as much game time as he would if he moved to another club or stayed at Lyon.
Liverpool also have a gap at left midfield but Rodgers needs to be a solid, exciting and reliable striker who will be back up to SAS as the Anfield club embark on their journey into Champions League football.
Lacazette is an extremely experienced player but whether Arsenal or Liverpool is the right move for the clubs or the player is very doubtful.
