Was Balotelli benched for controversial gun tweet?

Balotelli

It is being suggested in Italy that AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli didn't start against Lazio due to an inflammatory tweet he posted.

Mario Balotelli was a substitute for AC Milan's 1-1 draw with Lazio and some journalists are suggesting that the decision not to start him was related to his Twitter activity.

Ex-Manchester City man Balotelli has made a habit of courting controversy off the field and has had a tempestuous spell with the Rossoneri.

In the past Balotelli has commanded back-page headlines on multiple occasions with comments on his Twitter account and he has again set tongues wagging.

On Sunday afternoon, several hours before Milan's crunch match against Lazio, Balotelli posted a picture of two guns shaking hands with the slogan: 'Life is full of Fake people! Trust no one' commenting '(Only your Family).'

Balotelli was widely expected to start against Lazio but Clarence Seedorf instead opted to start Giampaolo Pazzini as a loan striker with Balotelli being brought on after half-time.

Some Italian newspapers believe that the decision could be related to Balotelli's tweet, which may hint at a disagreement with Seedorf.
