Swansea City may have lost this weekend, but two of their players topped the table in terms of a vital defensive stat.
Swansea City's season has certainly not gone according to plan. From being League Cup winners and many people's second team, the Welsh side are now struggling with the demands that a Europa League campaign can inflict even when a side is no longer in the competition.
The Swans gave a good account of themselves in Saturday's match against Everton, but they still fell short, leaving them without a win in their last five league games and just four points outside the relegation-zone.
But despite Garry Monk's side conceding three goals against the Toffees, two of their defenders topped the charts when it came to interceptions won this weekend.
Chico and Angel Rangel made 17 interceptions between them, and while that may be a small victory when the far more important one proved beyond them, it shows Swansea have the players who can ensure they make it another year of top-flight football next season.
No player in the Premier League made more interceptions than Chico at the weekend, and the only man to get close was his teammate. It is that fight that will prove vital in what remains of this season. But having scored two goals away from home against one of the best sides in the division, it is time to add clean-sheets to the other defensive elements that are so impressive.
That is, after all, the most important stat of all in terms of defending. But in the likes of Chico and Rangel, Swansea have the players to ensure this season does not end with the cruelest of twists.
