Match to be played on Wednesday 26th March 2014 at 20:00. Venue: Anfield, Liverpool.
Brendan Rodgers’ side played well to come from behind twice against Cardiff City, eventually producing a superb display of attacking football with a 6-3 win in Wales over the weekend.
The boss will be hoping for a tighter display defensively against Sunderland on Wednesday night, as Liverpool look to keep the pressure up as the Premier League title race enters the final straight.
Here’s the side Rodgers could go with against Sunderland.
GK – Simon Mignolet
The Belgian has reacted superbly to the couple of blips he had after the turn of the year. He’ll be one of the first names down in the team sheet.
RB – Glen Johnson
Reverted to the more familiar position of right-back against Cardiff and played well. Needs to be a little tighter defensively.
CB – Martin Skrtel
Skrtel should keep his place in central defence. He’ll be an important player against the pace and power contained in Swansea’s attack.
CB – Daniel Agger
Agger is a great player to have in the back four because he’s superb centrally and can sweep to cover for the left-back.
LB – Jon Flanagan
Equally effective on either side of the defence at the moment. Gets forward well and is a very difficult fullback for any winger to get the better of.
RM – Jordan Henderson
Henderson can play any position and any role across Liverpool’s midfield. He’s very effective on the right hand side of the diamond formation and can go wider if Rodgers needs him to.
CM – Steven Gerrard
Gerrard’s leadership was tested against Cardiff and he responded superbly. He’ll pull the strings in the middle of the team.
CM – Philippe Coutinho
Coutinho will play furthest forward out of the midfield. He’s at his best roaming those gaps in front of the opposition back four and can set up chances to score at will.
LM – Joe Allen
Allen will tuck in over on the left hand side, which makes it important for Flanagan to get forward and create width down that flank.
ST – Daniel Sturridge
Expect to see Sturridge drift of to the left if Liverpool are getting hurt down that side of the pitch. He’ll be all over Swansea’s central defenders if Liverpool are on top.
ST – Luis Suarez
The Uruguayan striker will play at the very top of the attack. He’ll be looking to add to the hat-trick he scored against the Bluebirds.
