Liverpool and Manchester United fans must have been getting a little excited last week, following comments from Xherdan Shaqiri’s brother about reported interest in the Bayern Munich winger.
“When clubs like Liverpool, Manchester United, Internazionale and other top clubs report to you, then of course we must listen to what they have to offer,” his brother Erdin is quoted as saying.
Given the players at Bayern’s disposal, and Shaqiri’s sporadic chances to show what he can do, a move away from the German champions would not have been too much of a surprise.
But considering his undeniable talent and his age, it would also be a risk on the part of Pep Guardiola – a risk that could see him part company with a player who can be devastating on his day.
For that reason alone Liverpool and United would have listened to the quotes with a tilted ear or two. But it now appears they should not bother, with fresh comments from Shaqiri himself suggesting he is happy where he is.
“I never said I want to leave,” the Swiss international reportedly told the SID news agency.
“I’m very happy in Munich and I’m not thinking about leaving.
“My brother’s opinion was written a bit differently to what he actually said. But, of course, if a top club comes in, then you’ve got to consider it. But every player is like that.”
So while he may be happy where he is, it appears he has not completely ruled out a move away...if the right club shows an interest.
