Gary Neville has identified Ilkay Gundogan as a better fit for Manchester United than Toni Kroos.
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has picked out Ilkay Gundogan as a better fit for David Moyes' Manchester United than top target Toni Kroos.
Answering questions on Twitter, the England assistant coach and former United captain said:
Asked who he would really want... he replied:
Both suggestions, the latter at least, is an unreachable hope for United, even though last summer at one stage it appeared possible. A newly signed contract at Real Madrid puts a summer transfer to Old Trafford off the agenda, while his agent even commented earlier this year that he could stay at the Bernabeu until retirement.
Gundogan may well have been United's top choice - but his injury troubles mean he is a massive risk for United to take as their marquee signing. Barcelona and Real were both interested in him but appear to have taken a step back from negotiations.
Kroos may not be Neville's perfect addition, but based on his body of work this season, it's hard to argue he would be anything but a vast improvement on United's midfield.
If Gundogan can get back to full fitness and find form between now and the end of the season, it isn't a stretch to see United making a bid for him too, or especially revisiting him should Kroos decide to renew at Bayern.
