Arsenal’s tails have been up for the majority of the season as the have mounted what seemed like a credible run for the Premier League title.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has remained unimpressed with his Gunners counterpart Arsene Wenger, infamously referring to him as a “specialist in failure” in February due to a trophy drought dating back to the 2005 FA Cup.
Nonetheless, Wenger’s charges headed into the weekend’s crucial clash at Stamford Bridge with bright eyes on the back of a North London derby defeat of Tottenham at White Hart Lane.
Yet it would all come crashing down soon enough for Arsenal.
A humiliating 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Mourinho’s men not only spoiled the French manager’s milestone match on the Arsenal bench, but cast serious doubt over the Gunners’ title charge and Wenger's future.
And the Chelsea faithful clearly weren’t inclined to give the rival tactician any quarter during Saturday’s events.
Blues supporters instead burst into a chorus echoing the sentiments of Mourinho - taking the Portuguese’s jibe from last month and mocking Wenger in song.
Chelsea fans followed up the initial chants by sarcastically imploring Wenger to stay with his longtime employers amidst uncertainty over whether his contract will be renewed this summer.
On what was an horrific day for all surrounding the Arsenal camp, some verbal taunting off the pitch certainly didn’t help soften a massive blow to a club pining away for silverware.
There’s little time to dwell on it for the Gunners, however, with a visit from Swansea coming up fast on Tuesday and Manchester City set to invade the Emirates at the weekend - the latter a golden chance for a retort of sorts as the title race enters its final phase.
