Liverpool kept up their title bid yesterday with a 6-3 win over Cardiff City, but one of their stars has been linked with a shock move away from Anfield.
England right back Glen Johnson is under contract for another 12 months yet, but it seems the Reds are ready to wait until the summer to open talks over an extension for the former Portsmouth and Chelsea defender - which could lead to the club losing the full back.
Spanish giants Real Madrid are being linked with a swoop for Johnson, as Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group are reportedly unwilling to offer big contracts to players over the age of 30, and 29-year-old Johnson is closing in on that age - meaning he is unlikely to earn more than his current £110,000 per week wage.
One of the few positions in the Real Madrid squad that could be improved upon is right back. Former Liverpool man Alvaro Arbeloa is currently first choice at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, with academy product Dani Carvajal also competing for the starting role in Carlo Ancelotti's side.
Whilst the rumoured £5m bid isn't going to break the bank for Real, Johnson doesn't represent a real upgrade over Arbeloa at this point, and after the recent captures of the likes of Isco, Asier Illarramendi and Gareth Bale, it seems Madrid are looking to bring in younger players at the moment - something that Johnson can't offer.
There remain huge question marks over Johnson's long-term future at Liverpool, but with Madrid's current transfer policy, it seems unlikely that they would see Johnson as the man to replace Arbeloa at right back.
