On this day: Chelsea's £1.7m teen, Szczesny replacements and Liverpool after £5m Austrian

On the 23rd March 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 23rd March 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 23rd March 2013…

What a Cheek!

Chelsea handed a new contract to teenage talent Ruben Loftus-Cheek - and the amount of money he was set to be paid was classed as ridiculous in the media.

The talented midfielder, compared to Brazilian legend Socrates, had starred in the club’s NextGen campaign and was at the centre of a nasty legal battle involving an agent and the FA - it was all pretty messy.

But it emerged amongst it all that Loftus-Cheek was set to be offered a whopping £1.7 million before he even played in the first-team.

RLC is still waiting for a first-team debut.

New hands at the pump

Arsenal were reportedly after a new goalkeeper after problems with Wojciech Szczesny became ever more evident.

He had been out of form for the club and at the time had lost his place in the starting XI to Lukasz Fabianski.

Then his dad came out with some rather scathing remarks about the club - and it all seemed to be going wrong.

Pepe Reina, Victor Valdes and Rene Adler were all linked with the role - but a year later and nothing has changed.

Viennese whirl

Andreas Weimann, who was in top form for Aston Villa last season, had just rejected a new contract at Villa Park - and that reportedly sparked the interest of Liverpool to his situation.

Reports suggested that Liverpool were hopeful of getting their hands on the player for as little as £5 million.

Inter Milan were also keen - but a year later and the Austrian is still at Villa.
