Michy Batshuayi has made plenty of headlines this season, most recently for revealing that his favourite club is Arsenal.
“It is a club with a good philosophy, where youngsters get their chance. I’ve been an Arsenal fan since I was a kid,” he told RTBF.
But he was generating plenty of stories before that, too, as any striker with 20 goals in the campaign to date would do.
The 20-year-old Belgian striker has been in sparkling form for Standard Liege, and has reportedly attracted a number of suitors as a result, with the Gunners joined by the likes of Everton and Tottenham in the gossip columns – although it has since been said that the latter have shown no interest in the forward.
But despite the player recently stating that his preferred destinations would be England or Germany, Portuguese newspaper A Bola reports that Benfica are also very much in the running.
Liege’s owner Roland Duchatelet is quoted in the paper as saying, “Yes, Benfica is very interested. We’re talking some time.”
The report goes on to claim that any negotiations are likely to begin at around €8million. And with Rodrigo likely to leave the Primeira Liga leaders this summer, it makes sense that they would be seeking a potential replacement.
So if Arsenal are as interested in the player as he appears to be in them, they may be wise to make their move sooner rather than later.
