On this day: United 'sign' Argentine, Kakuta on Chelsea woe and Diaby speaks fitness

Abou Diaby 2

On the 22nd March 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 22nd March 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 22nd March 2013…

Diaby crocked

Arsenal injury crock Abou Diaby was speaking about his fitness - and suggested he was now in control of his physical condition.

The midfielder had just returned from a thigh problem after he had an excellent start to the campaign - but he felt he could put his injury problems behind him:

“I got injured for three months, which is a large part of the season, but even so I have still made 14 starts, which is really good. We also have nine games to go, so I will get to 16 or 17 or more, which is good. I have tried to look after myself a lot this season by having good treatment, a good recovery [period] and all the things that make a player better.”

Weird that, because he has not played since that interview. He suffered a knee injury in training and has not played since.

Gael force

Chelsea winger Gael Kakuta, who had caused a storm when Chelsea first snapped him up, admitted a desire to leave the club.

He was on loan at Vitesse Arnhem at the time - and suggested the massive squad at Stamford Bridge made his first-team opportunities minimal:

"I don't dream about Chelsea anymore - I used to, now I know better. I hope I can join a club like Vitesse next season, where I can play every week. Chelsea have far too many players. At my age I need to play regularly but if I go back I'll just get 10 minutes a month and I don't want that."

Kakuta is still a Chelsea player - but is currently out on loan at Italian outfit Lazio.

United ‘sign’ Garay

Manchester United ‘signed’ Ezequiel Garay a year ago today. It was reported in the Portuguese press that the Argentine had already agreed a move to the club for the summer.

Of course it is now clear that is not the case.

Garay remains to leave Benfica - but continues to be heavily linked with an Old Trafford switch.
