Manchester United backed up an impressive win against Olympiakos in the Champions League with a solid win against West Ham United at Upton Park in the Premier League.
Wayne Rooney bagged both of the goals in the 2-0 victory with his first likely to go down as the goal of the season, with a superb strike from just inside West Ham’s half.
Rooney wasn’t the only impressive performer during the game as Michael Carrick also played well, filling in through the centre of defence after Rio Ferdinand was ruled out of the game against his former club with a back problem.
Here are our player ratings for Manchester United.
David De Gea – 6
Solid, didn’t have too much to do and was reliable when called upon. His distribution was as good as it’s been all season.
Rafael – 6
Worked hard on the right hand side of defence. Got stuck in well when West Ham tried to intimidate him physically.
Michael Carrick – 7
Did a brilliant job against an aggressive attack in an unnatural position. Wouldn’t be a surprise if he ends his career as a centre back.
Phil Jones – 7
A very good performance from Jones, which was important following the poor showing he displayed against Liverpool last weekend. Read the game well and got stuck in aerially.
Alexander Buttner – 6
Did well at both ends of the pitch. His eagerness to win back possession in high areas was impressive and allowed United to maintain pressure.
Ashley Young – 6
Some wayward passes at time but a decent performance. He’ll be better for the game time and is pushing to start in the Manchester derby.
Marouane Fellaini – 6
Very nearly had a great goal towards the end of the game but for a fluffed shot. Dominant in midfield physically.
Darren Fletcher – 6
Pulled the strings in midfield well for United. Doesn’t look like his missed a lot of football despite his recent history of battling against illness.
Juan Mata – 7
Thrives when he’s allowed to roam all over the pitch. Great passing, great vision and could easily have bagged a goal but for a couple of good saves from Adrian.
Shinji Kagawa – 6
Did a very good job out on the left hand side. He offered control and looked dangerous when he was able to cut inside and get involved centrally.
Wayne Rooney – 8
A stunning goal for his first and a brilliant piece of improvisation for his second. Harassed the West Ham defence throughout the game and dropped off into the midfield when his side were under pressure.
Hernandez – 5
Worked his socks off when he came on for Rooney. Dropped off and got involved in some good passing exchanges.
Welbeck – 5
Didn’t have enough time to get into the game but injected some pace into the side, which helped stretch West Ham.
