European TV pundit Jan Aage Fjortoft is one of many to have questioned why technology couldn’t have been used to overturn Andre Marriner’s decision to send off Kieran Gibbs earlier today.
Marriner sent off the left-back after he mistook the player for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who had handled the ball inside the penalty area which led to Chelsea going 3-0 ahead against the Gunners.
Fjortoft made no attempt to hide his contempt for the decision, pointing out that a quick look at some technology (a TV replay) from the fourth official could have prevented Gibbs having to leave the field with the right culprit being punished.
The debate over the greater use of technology in football is likely to roll on for longer with this just another example of where something like TV replay booth in American Football could have worked perfectly.
In 2014. 45 years after we sent a man on the moon, it's not possible with all the technology to tell the ref, who off!! 4th official: Hello!— Jan Aage Fjortoft (@JanAageFjortoft) March 22, 2014
