A selection of the latest stories involving Liverpool Football Club this Friday morning.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has told the Liverpool Echo that his side have a great motivation in terms of their achievement on the field – rather than being taken out for a free meal by their manager.
Last season Rodgers took the squad out when they won three games on the bounce, but says those days are gone.
He said: “There are no more free lunches – we’ve moved on from that!
“This group of players have great motivation. There is real consistency in our performance level now. It’s a huge credit to them and how they’re working.”
The Liverpool manager also reflected on the performance at Old Trafford, saying: “We had a beautiful arrogance in our game. The intensity at which we pressed and some of the imagination in our football was great. Defensively, we were very strong.”
Flanagan came back into the side in November and has impressed with a series of performances – including his display against Manchester United last weekend.
Rodgers said: “Jon will be given a new contract – no question. Come the summer he’s got another year so he will definitely be given a new deal.
“He has been outstanding. It’s great when you see a young player develop like that.
“He’s only very young but his performance levels are so mature. I think the biggest thing for me has been his temperament.”
Jorge Jesus, the Benfica boss, said: “The league is full of high quality players so it’s normal for other clubs to be interested. He’s going through a good moment.”
