Tim Sherwood has made it clear he wants complete control over transfers, suggesting this summer could be very different to the last one where Andre Villas-Boas reportedly had several signings pushed onto him.
Sherwood’s approach is seemingly to take comprehensive control of the transfer process to make sure that he gets the signings he wants as Tottenham prepare for another assault on the top four next season.
“Nobody else will come in unless I sanction it. Is Konoplyanka the kind of player I want to sign? Not at the moment. I believe I’ll be here next year and I’m planning for next season,” he said at his pre-Benfica press conference last night.
One player linked with the North London club where this approach could backfire is in relation to AS Roma defender Federico Balzaretti.
The experienced 32-year-old, who can play on the left side of central defence or as a left-back, has been linked with Tottenham by Italian site TMW.
On the surface it would appear to be a potentially good piece of business; Balzaretti has 15 caps for Italy, he’s versatile and will only have one-year left on his contract from this summer, which means he’ll be cheap.
Where Tottenham could be knocked back is if Sherwood isn’t willing to allow Technical Director Franco Baldini to get involved in the transfer process.
Baldini has a very obvious connection with Roma, the same connection he used to engineer Erik Lamela’s £30 million transfer to White Hart Lane last summer.
Baldini is someone that Sherwood can use to land Balzaretti but only if he’s willing to give the Italian a little bit of control in the transfer and negotiation process.
Tottenham could lose Jan Vertonghen this summer after the Belgian refused to rule out leaving the club for Champions League football earlier this season and that means a left sided defensive signing needs to be a priority for Sherwood.
Balzaretti was linked with Tottenham last summer at the same time the Lamela negotiations were going on and it will be even more difficult for Spurs to get their man at the second time of trying unless Sherwood is willing to allow Baldini to help.
