Predicted Manchester United XI to play West Ham United - Should Moyes risk RVP?

Match to be played on Saturday 22nd March 2014 at 17:30. Venue: Boleyn Ground, London.

After the disappointment of the defeat to Liverpool last weekend, Manchester United were handed a boost in the Champions League as they progressed to the last eight after beating Olympiakos over two legs.

The win last night has created some positive feeling and energy around the club, which David Moyes will be hoping his side can carry forward into this weekend’s game against West Ham United.

Here’s the side Moyes could go with for the important Premier League game.

GK – David De Gea

De Gea seems to be playing at the top of his game right now and will be confident after his world class double save last night.

RB – Rafael

Rafael should continue on the right hand side of the defence. His competitive nature will be useful in a hostile Upton Park atmosphere.

CB – Phil Jones

Jones had a solid game against Olympiakos and should continue in the heart of the defence. He needs to be ready to deal with the rough, physical approach West Ham will bring to the game.

CB – Rio Ferdinand

With Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling both carrying knocks and Nemanja Vidic suspended, Ferdinand could be asked to continue in the back four.

LB – Patrice Evra

Evra’s experience will be important at both ends of the pitch. He needs to stay tight, close to the central defenders and get forward to provide extra width when he can.

Patrice Evra Man Utd DF 26 28 2,460
Rafael Man Utd DF 8 16 1,193
Chris Smalling Man Utd DF 8 21 1,578
Phil Jones Man Utd DF 2 18 1,522
Alexander Büttner Man Utd DF 1 3 111

RM – Antonio Valencia

Providing there are no serious complications from Valencia’s swollen eye problem, he should slot in over on the right hand side injecting real pace into the midfield.

CM – Michael Carrick

Carrick should resume his normal place in the midfield, sitting in front of the back four and protecting the defence through clever interceptions.

Michael Carrick Man Utd MF 68 21 1,783
Luis Antonio Valencia Man Utd MF 36 23 1,616
Tom Cleverley Man Utd MF 34 20 1,463
Marouane Fellaini Man Utd MF 25 11 700
Adnan Januzaj Man Utd MF 14 22 1,328

CM – Marouane Fellaini

Ryan Giggs had a decent game last night but it’s a big ask for the 40-year-old to play again so soon. Expect Fellaini to come back in.

AM – Juan Mata

Mata should revert to his more suited number ten role. He couldn’t play in the Champions League as he was ineligible so he should be a bit fresher for the rest.

LM – Danny Welbeck

It’d be harsh on Welbeck to drop him following the way he played last night. He looked like making things happen when he got the ball on the left and can give the West Ham defence some real problems.

ST – Wayne Rooney

Rooney should slot into the centre of attack with Moyes unlikely to take any risks with Robin Van Persie after the Dutchman was carried off last night.
