Match to be played on Saturday 22nd March 2014 at 15:00. Venue: Cardiff City Stadium, Cardiff.
It’s a cliché saying but it applies perfectly to Liverpool this weekend; if it’s not broken, don’t try to fix it.
Brendan Rodgers’ side have been able to build on their success in the derby against Manchester United last weekend as they go to Wales looking for another three points against Cardiff.
It won’t be easy with the Bluebirds scrapping away at the other end of the Premier League table but Rodgers can name a strong side that will give Liverpool every chance of a win.
Here’s the side he may go with.
GK – Simon Mignolet
The Belgian shot stopper continues in goal. There continues to be speculation over another goalkeeper coming in at Liverpool but Mignolet can prove why that signing isn’t necessary.
RB – Jon Flanagan
Flanagan’s form at right-back is keeping Glen Johnson pinned in an unfamiliar role on the left of the back four. More of the same please.
CB – Martin Skrtel
Skrtel has been Liverpool’s standout central defender throughout the season and he should continue in the heart of the back four. He offers a real presence and strength.
CB – Daniel Agger
Agger is better equipped to get about quickly, slightly more agile than Skrtel and seemingly the perfect partner. He was rock solid against Manchester United.
LB – Glen Johnson
Johnson will carry on down the left hand side. It’s a role which isn’t natural to him but he’s doing a good job in the absence of left-backs who have spent the majority of the season in the treatment room.
RM – Raheem Sterling
Sterling’s pace on the right is going to be a real asset for Liverpool. He can use it to catch Cardiff on the counter when they creep forward looking for a goal.
CM – Jordan Henderson
Henderson will be the midfielder who goes about his business, covering multiple positions. He’ll protect the defence when he has to and get forward to support the attack.
CM – Steven Gerrard
Gerrard has a big role to play in this game because Cardiff could look to make it scrappy, trying to drag Liverpool out of their comfort zone. Gerrard needs to ensure no one loses the plot.
LM – Joe Allen
Allen has really risen to the challenge this season and he deserves the chance to stay on the left. He’ll tuck inside to form that midfield diamond but he will have to go out wide if Johnson is under pressure.
ST – Daniel Sturridge
Sturridge will take his usual slot in the attack. He’ll drift wide at times but has been superb through the middle this season.
ST – Luis Suarez
Suarez will try to be all over the Cardiff central defenders like a rash. He’ll press and harass them, looking to push them back which will create space for the midfielders coming forwards.
