The beleaguered United boss will need to revamp his defence this summer, with long-serving duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand poised to leave the club at the end of the season. Vidic has already agreed a move Italy with Inter Milan, whilst Ferdinand has been linked with a move to the United States.
A number of names have been linked with moves to Old Trafford this summer, but one name that has cropped up today is Southampton's Croatian international Lovren. Having arrived on the South Coast from French side Lyon for around £8.5m, there were high expectations for him - and he hasn't disappointed, turning in a number of impressive displays for Mauricio Pochettino's side.
But should United make a move for the 24-year-old, he would have huge shoes to fill as Vidic departs, so based on this season, who has been the more impressive - Lovren or Vidic?
|Name||Team||Pos||Aerial Won||Aerial Lost||Head Clearance||Att Hd Total||Att Hd Goal||Apps||Mins|
|Nemanja Vidic||Man Utd||DF||80||37||140||8||0||20||1,654|
Both players stand at 6ft 2in tall, but there is a clear advantage from Serbian Vidic. He has won more aerial battles, lost fewer and completed far more headed clearances. With most big centre backs, contributing in an attacking sense from set pieces is important, and whilst Lovren has scored one more headed goal than Vidic, the former Spartak Moscow man has had more attempts on goal, showing just how much of a danger he can still be in the opposition penalty area.
Interceptions and Blocks
|Name||Team||Pos||Interception||Interceptions In Box||Blocked Cross||Apps||Mins|
|Nemanja Vidic||Man Utd||DF||37||3||3||20||1,654|
Any defender needs to be able to stop the opposition attacking, whether that be through interceptions or blocks - and it's Lovren who comes out on top here. He has made a lot more interceptions this season, including more inside the box as well as more blocked crosses - which is promising for a player eight years younger than Vidic, as it suggests his reading of the game is already at a high level.
|Name||Team||Pos||Total Tackle||Won Tackle||Challenge Lost||Apps||Mins|
|Nemanja Vidic||Man Utd||DF||24||19||6||20||1,654|
Tackling and making challenges is another integral part of being a top defender, and once again it's Lovren who has the edge. The Croatian has made nearly twice as many tackles and almost twice as many successful tackles. However, he has lost almost twice as many challenges, but once again it shows that Lovren isn't afraid to get stuck in - something which has made Vidic such a cult hero at Old Trafford.
