Former Liverpool midfielder Vladimir Smicer has said he would like to see his old side lift the league title for Steven Gerrard, and hailed the current side for having the best attack in the league.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “I was there when he really established himself in the team and he’s still so important to Liverpool. I know how hard he works.

“He has shown his love for Liverpool over many years. He has had opportunities to go and play for other big clubs but he has always stayed loyal.

“They are playing great football and there is a lot of confidence in the team. Liverpool have the best attack in the league.”

Smicer has also talked about returning to Anfield for the 'Celebration of the 96' football match to mark the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

He said: “I am really looking forward to going back for the Hillsborough game.

“I’ve been back to Anfield twice since I left to watch a game there but I haven’t stepped foot on to the pitch.

“Anfield is such a special place and now I will finally get the chance to play there again.”

Mamadou Sakho has also been speaking to the Liverpool Echo following his return to fitness after a hamstring injury.

The French defender has admitted it will be difficult for him to get back into the team with the side playing so well after a long spell on the sidelines.

Sakho said: “Initially we thought it was the muscle in my hamstring but it turned out to be the tendon which was causing the problem and that took more time to heal. I worked really closely with the medical staff to get back.

“It will be difficult to get back into the team because everyone is playing well, but at a big club like Liverpool you expect competition for places.”
