Koné: 'It's when - not if, Everton qualify for the Champions League'

Everton's Ivory Coast striker Arouna Koné believes that Roberto Martinez will lead Everton to Europe's elite competition during his tenure.

Champions League football back at Goodison Park? Why not.

That's the view of Arouna Koné, who believes the European nights will return to the club sooner rather than later under the stewardship of Toffees boss Roberto Martinez.

Koné has worked with Martinez previously at former club Wigan Athletic, and was one of the Spaniard's first signings after making his transition from the DW Stadium to Goodison Park.

It's from this long-term working relationship that Koné states his belief that Martinez is the best manager in the top flight.

"For me Roberto is the best manager in the Premier League because he is the perfect blend of the Spanish and English mentalities," he tells the Liverpool Echo.

"He gives us players the two technical insights of England and Spain, where I have also played."

"I came here because of Roberto. It was always my objective to carry on working with him when he left Wigan and took over at Everton."

Koné is adamant that the former Swansea City and Wigan Athletic boss will continue to build on the solid groundwork he has established since his arrival in the summer of 2013.

One of the clearest changes under Martinez has been the development of an attacking and attractive style that has been easy on the eye and has had Everton fans purring.

Although this season may not be the one for Everton, the Ivory Coast striker is certain that in the coming seasons Everton will rival city rivals Liverpool and re-enter Europe's biggest club competition.

“The Champions League will happen. This squad has the quality to get into the top four. It will be tough to make it this season but next season I have every belief," Koné claims.

“There are enough good players here to take part in it.”
