Morgan Schneiderlin has been speaking to RTL about the recent stories linking him with a possible England call-up.
In quotes later published by Foot Mercato, the Southampton midfielder said, “These are the English tabloids. They asked me a bunch if questions about the selection. The next day, I open the newspaper and I see that I said that I wanted to play for England. This is completely false.”
So that is one thing the 24-year-old Frenchman has put to bed. But what of his future; because while categorically putting an end to one rumour, he may have inadvertently started another in the same interview.
It all seemed to be going well for Southampton fans when Schneiderlin said, “The club wants to grow. We will try to finish as high as possible to continue like this for a long time.”
But when quizzed on the rumours of a possible departure he is quoted as saying, “Arsenal? I have a three year contract, then it will not be easy. It is also my dream to one day play in a great club, so why not?”
And there it is: the old “Why not?” – A phrase on which countless headlines and rumours thrive.
At 24, the Saints midfielder has plenty of time to make it to one of those “great clubs” to which he refers. Then again, he could remain and help turn Southampton into one of them.
