On this day: Chelsea trump Arsenal for starlet, Valencia admits poor season

Antonio Valencia

On the 19th March 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 19th March 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 19th March 2013…

Golden Brown

Chelsea were reported to be on the verge of joining Arsenal in a bidding war for young English striker Isaiah Brown.

The then 16-year-old was being highlighted as one of the top talents in the country and was at the time a fledgling at the West Brom academy.

Arsenal were seemingly the favourites to snap him up - but in July Chelsea did win the race with a compensation fee of around £1.2 million reportedly going toward the Baggies.

And Chelsea now have a player already being compared to Didier Drogba in their ranks.

No improvement

After a romping 2011-12 Antonio Valencia would have been hoping to kick on in 2012-13 - but he endured a much more frustrating campaign than was expected leading to criticism from many quarters over his inconsistent performances.

A year ago to the day he admitted this himself in an interview, stating:

"It's not been quite the season I would have hoped for on a personal front. The injuries I've had have held me back a bit and I still get the odd twinge in my leg. That has perhaps affected my progress slightly. But I hope I get the chance to be involved in as many games as possible and if I'm picked I'm determined to grab my opportunities and do my best for my team-mates, the manager and the fans."

A year down the line and the Ecuadorean is still out of favour at United as he continues to struggle to reach his best level of performance.

Lamps the best ever

John Terry was speaking about Chelsea star Frank Lampard - and suggested Lampard was the club's best ever.

Speaking about Lamps hitting the 200 goal mark with the club, two short of Bobby Tambling’s record, JT stated:

“You talk about the Zolas and the best players to have played at the club, but for me he is the best. We all love him, we'll all be pushing for him to reach the record.”

Of course he went in to beat that record and sign a new deal at the club.
