Much has been written about why Paul Pogba opted to leave Manchester United for Juventus.
Whatever the reason, the Frenchman has proved to be very much the one that got away, after a string of outstanding performances for the Serie A side have thrust him well and truly into the limelight.
It is no exaggeration to say that if Pogba was still at Old Trafford, David Moyes’ side would not have suffered the faltering season they are currently in the midst of.
But there is no point dwelling on the past. The French international is long gone. And yet that has not stopped former United chief executive David Gill revealing the club did everything they could to keep hold of one of the most exciting young talents in the game.
In an interview with United’s Scandinavian Supporters’ Club and later published by RedCafe, Gill is quoted as saying, “We offered him a very good wage, as well as a very generous fee for his agent.
“I don’t want to go into details because it was a complex issue. However, what I can say is that we were very disappointed. Whenever a player is determined to leave and his contract allows it, there is nothing we can do about it
“I can assure you that we did not hold anything back, financially.”
Some believe Pogba had long since made up his mind to leave United for pastures new. But he will always go down as a might-have-been in terms of United’s history.
With the club still crying out for a world-class midfielder, Pogba could prove to be one of the very best.
